Porter County planners approved a conditional three-year use to allow an online firearms business tied to a federal firearms license (FFL) at a rural property in Belville.
The matter, recorded as case UV2025-3 for property at 583 West 100 North, drew several neighbors who expressed concern about potential on-site inventory, deliveries and the risk of discharge on or near their parcels. One neighbor told the board he spends a lot of time on adjacent land and was worried about safety if firearms were stored or used nearby.
The applicant said the intended business model emphasizes online sales and drop-shipping. He told the board he does not intend to hold inventory long-term or conduct manufacturing or gunsmithing on-site, and that any transfers would follow federal FFL procedures. He said personal firearms are kept separately and that he would not allow on-site shooting related to the business.
A county representative reminded the audience that the federal licensing process (the FFL) governs many operational details, including inspection and transfer rules, and explained that local approval is a limited, site-specific step in a broader regulatory process. Board members asked clarifying questions about customer visits, inventory and whether ammunition would be held on the premises; the applicant said inventory would be limited and most shipments would be direct to a licensed FFL or shipped out the same day.
After discussion the board approved the request by a 4–1 vote; the clerk recorded Tim Fish voting no and other members in favor. The approval is conditional and limited to a three-year term pending any required federal approvals and local monitoring.
Staff and the board recorded that enforcement of specific operational conditions (stocking limits, shipping practices) would depend on a combination of county conditions and adherence to federal licensing requirements.
