Student leaders describe busy start to school year; public commenters press board on counselors and utility-related funding

Student leaders from Morro Bay High and San Luis Obispo High presented quick updates at the Sept. 2 meeting, highlighting new schedules, club rushes and athletic and arts activity.
"This year over at Morro Bay High, we have a really new schedule for all of our students... it's called tutorial," said Jocelyn Ocampo Mateo, Morro Bay ASB president, explaining the school moved its tutorial block to Mondays and Tuesdays and described registration and welcome events. She added that about 75% of Morro Bay students participated in sports or clubs last year.
Zoe Fuji, ASB president at San Luis Obispo High, described a busy opening week, a first-ever girls flag football game (13-13 tie), new dance and theater activities, and upcoming homecoming events. "We had signs, music... it was an awesome day to be a tiger," she said.
In public comment, Phil Angel, representing the San Luis Coastal Teachers Association, praised district staff and singled out counselors and support staff for their contributions while asking the board to investigate departures. "Kayla Townsend was one of our counselors... she's left our district, and I ask why," Angel said, urging the board to consider the effect of budget cuts on staffing.
A community commenter (Laporte) addressed the board about SB846 and PG&E funding, outlining his view of how mitigation and management fees have been allocated in past agreements and urging skepticism of PG&E claims about financial constraints. "We pay twice as much as everybody else because we're in PGE's zone," he said, calling attention to revenue flows he said supported Diablo Canyon plant operations and related mitigation funds.
The board thanked the students for their reports and received the public comments; no formal action was taken in response during the meeting. The districtand board said they will continue oversight of staffing and budgetary matters and pursue follow-up as needed.
