The Glynn County Islands Planning Commission on March 17, 2026 unanimously approved site plan SP-26-5 for the Frederica Gymnasium, an 18,076-square-foot addition at 200 Murray Way in a planned development, the commission chair said.
Christina Wright, senior planner, told commissioners the site plan includes a plat, tree plan, elevations and a 3D color rendering and that any required tree-plan changes would return to the commission as an amendment. "The Frederica Gymnasium site plan is a request for" an 18,076-square-foot gymnasium within the planned development, she said.
The applicant, Jay Clemmings of Robert Civil Engineering, said the proposed building would connect to the existing gym and field house and be sited in a former gravel maintenance area. "We're seeking approval as presented for the gymnasium," Clemmings said. He told commissioners the project is not expected to add employees and therefore requires no additional parking, and he said the existing parking can support the addition.
Clemmings said the current tree plan shows three trees proposed for removal: one would be impacted by the gym footprint and two are near a drive aisle that the project team will try to save but may not count toward the tree-plan requirements. On drainage, he said the project increases impervious area by less than 5,000 square feet and "does not require detention" under the cited local ordinance; he described routing options that connect to existing drainage and outfall toward a wetland near Demery Road.
The chair opened the public hearing; no members of the public spoke. A commissioner moved to approve SP-26-5 "as presented," another commissioner seconded, and the commission voted unanimously to approve the site plan.
Votes at a glance: The commission voted unanimously to approve the Jan. 27, 2026 meeting minutes earlier in the session; it then unanimously approved site plan SP-26-5 (Frederica Gymnasium). The meeting was adjourned following the approvals.
The commission did not set conditions on the record beyond the note that any substantive tree-plan or MEP-driven changes would return to the commission as an amendment.
