Alex Longman, the Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year, told attendees he has been part of the club since about 2015 and called the organization "one of my second homes." He said the award helped him appreciate how many people the club reaches across Massachusetts and the Cape.
"It's an amazing place. It's honestly one of my second homes," Longman said, introducing himself as a Mashpee High School student entering his senior year and noting this is his first year working at the club.
Club staff recognized other finalists, including Fletcher (a senior at Sturgis) and Riley Anderson (an apprentice plumber at Upper Cape Regional Technical High School). The staff member said the finalists reflected a diverse set of schools and career paths and expressed pride in the program's ability to influence young people's trajectories.
Longman described forming friendships through club programs and said the Youth of the Year experience helped him understand the club's broader reach. The meeting included thanks to volunteers and donors and a brief photo opportunity; organizers said certificates for youth would be distributed at the club.
