Todd Davis, fleet services director, said the unit (purchased with ARPA funds in 2023) provides modest charging capacity (about 6.9 kilowatts) and is solar powered, so offering public access imposes no operational cost burden. Staff described the area south of the Broad as having far fewer public chargers and said the county will use the pilot to collect usage data and identify better public locations and potential federal grant opportunities.
Committee members asked about charging speeds and typical charge time; Todd Davis and fleet staff explained that charge times depend on the vehicle, that the unit can provide a partial or full charge depending on vehicle battery size, and that Tesla vehicles can charge with an adapter. The committee approved the resolution with no objection.
