Lakehurst council weighs nonlethal options to curb geese on Church Street

Councilman Steven Oglesby told the work session the borough’s Church Street area is being ‘‘invaded by geese,’’ leaving droppings on the roadway, sidewalks and yards and creating a nuisance for nearby residents. Oglesby said a simple barrier such as a snow fence might help keep the birds nearer the lake.
Council President Jeffrey Emmons said he and Dave Winton met with a private company that proposed control measures but that the estimate was ‘‘too expensive’’ and that Mr. Winton is still exploring alternative approaches. Resident Bob Vosseller suggested contacting the Animal Protection League, which he said offered free, nonlethal options at a recent Manchester Township meeting.
No formal action or funding commitment was taken during the work session; council members discussed options and asked staff to continue exploring cost-effective, nonlethal measures.
