Billy Mack, owner of 1st Coastal, told the Hampton Town trustees on March 23 that newer low‑power bubbler systems are a more reliable approach to preventing ice damage to docks than older propeller-driven "ice eater" devices. "Wedealt a lot of these ice eaters," Mack said in the remote presentation, "they only last about two years... they draw about 15 amps. These bubbler systems are much quieter, draw three or four amps, and last much longer."
Mack described how the bubbler systems inject air through hoses attached to pilings and said the systems protect a roughly 30‑foot radius around a unit while consuming far less power. He said his company manages 200–300 docks seasonally in nearby towns and has observed fixed dock sections lifted or damaged during this years severe ice events. Mack showed a photograph of a dock section that had lifted under ice and explained installation tradeoffs, including whether a homeowner needs an electrician to put in a dedicated outlet.
Trustees asked technical follow-ups about operation thresholds; Mack said the units typically run off a thermostat that activates near 29 degrees Fahrenheit. After the presentation a trustee moved that the board "complete the application" related to repair and permitting discussed in the presentation; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. The board did not adopt a formal new policy on municipal installation or funding at the meeting.
Why this matters: Several trustees noted the local cost and safety implications of failing dock hardware, and that systems requiring heavy electrical upgrades are difficult to maintain in winter. If homeowners adopt lower‑power bubblers, the town could see fewer emergency interventions and less repeated repair work.
