Adair County supervisors approve culvert contract, fairground electrical bid and hire intern

The Adair County Board of Supervisors met May 6 and approved a series of routine but consequential items, including contracts, personnel actions and several departmental acknowledgments. Jerry Walker, chair of the Adair County Board of Supervisors, presided over the session that began at 9:00 a.m.
The board approved the meeting agenda and accepted minutes from the April 29, 2026 meeting. Claims presented for payment totaling $6,802.08 were approved. Supervisors acknowledged receipt of monthly departmental reports and approved a general relief application and homestead/military disallowances; the chair was authorized to sign the disallowance letters.
Two bids for grandstand electrical work at the county fairgrounds were considered. The low bid of $26,277.74 from Marquardt Electric was approved per the Fair Board recommendation; a higher bid from Wireman Electric was listed at $42,791.96.
On personnel matters, the board approved hiring Erin Ford as an engineering intern at $18.00 per hour beginning May 18, 2026; the hiring discussion included mention of future licensure requirements following graduation. The board also accepted the resignation of Veterans’ Affairs Assistant Denna Mitchell and authorized Veterans’ Affairs Administrator Gwen Johnston to begin the hiring process for a replacement.
The meeting included an engineer’s report and several routine bridge and road items. A separate resolution awarding a Kent Avenue culvert replacement contract was adopted unanimously (see separate item). The board discussed mental-health advocacy staffing and broader county revenue concerns, including potential reallocation of LOST funds, effects of the 2% property tax cap, and valuation impacts tied to wind turbines; supervisors asked that the mental-health advocate staffing item be scheduled for further discussion at a future meeting.
The board approved and signed the final voucher for the N11 Lincoln Bridge Project before adjourning at 9:48 a.m.
