Organizers told the Porter County board that the county’s third annual health and wellness fair saw strong turnout, broad vendor participation and measurable digital reach.
The presenter said 42 organizations participated and that the fair delivered many free services — including dental screenings, heart screenings and school physicals — and more than 100 free haircuts. The event distributed about 220 backpacks to students in 55 schools across 21 cities, with most backpacks going to elementary students in Valparaiso-area schools. Organizers said the fair also featured activities such as face painting and a photo booth and that volunteer and vendor feedback described the event as one of the best to date.
Digital outreach was modest but effective, the presenter said: an advertising spend under $100 produced roughly 9,806 people reached, 18,740 impressions and more than 1,000 engagements. Vendors and partners provided many of the services; organizers limited participation to social-service agencies that were not charging for services where possible.
Board members and staff discussed logistics for possible expansion (including trying additional Portage locations), vendor needs for covered spaces during rain, and steps to streamline screening and flow for high-demand services such as school physicals. Organizers noted minor adjustments for next year — more food-truck variety and different audio arrangements — but said the fair’s overall footprint and services were well received.
The board thanked organizers for the event and noted staff would consider logistics and outreach changes for next year.
