Police chief reports difficulty contacting approved hire; council to continue search for part-time officer

Police Chief David Pernice told the Union City Borough Council at its Aug. 27 meeting that a new hire approved at a prior meeting has not responded to outreach. Pernice said he has attempted contact without success and plans to reach back out to the consortium list of candidates (32 names) and to coordinate with the Civil Service Commission to schedule oral exams.
Pernice said his staffing preference is to hire two part-time officers but noted that only one part-time position was approved by council. After discussion the council agreed to continue searching for one part-time officer. The Police Chief said he will send letters and pursue the civil-service testing process; council requested updates as candidates are identified.
