Union City Council unanimously hires part-time officer from civil service list

Union City Borough Council voted unanimously Aug. 13 to hire Kenneth Fye from the certified civil service list as a part-time police officer. Councilor Joyce made the motion and Councilor Osborn seconded; the motion passed without opposition.
The hire followed remarks from Mayor Robert Wolf stressing the importance of maintaining a borough police department and a council discussion that framed part-time staffing as a way to increase coverage while limiting payroll costs. Borough Manager Cindy Wells said the borough budget had allowed at least $33,560 for wages and benefits and that actual cost would depend on the number of hours the officer works.
Police Chief David Pernice reviewed recent activity, saying the department handled 269 calls between June 1 and Aug. 13 — an average of about 3.6 calls per day — with some incidents occupying entire shifts, including a multi-hour domestic call. Chief Pernice also said he and Officer Shelly attended an Alert Active Shooter training on July 24–25 hosted by Millcreek Police Department, and that applications to the UC Community Foundation for four tasers and for additional security cameras were awarded.
No formal opposition or abstentions were recorded on the hiring motion. The council’s recorded vote was unanimous in favor. The council adjourned at 7:06 p.m.; an executive session on personnel and contract matters followed with no additional action taken.
