Union City council moves to pursue Broadband Ready Communities designation

The Union City Borough Council voted July 9 to proceed with the process to obtain a Broadband Ready Communities designation and to hold the required public meeting. The resolution would authorize the Erie Area Council of Governments (EACOG) to serve as the borough’s municipal broadband champion.
Borough staff said the permitting requirements in the borough align with the program recommendations and that the designation could create opportunities for additional internet service providers to consider serving Union City. Councilor Kerns moved to proceed with the public meeting and resolution and Councilor Joyce seconded; the motion carried unanimously.
Council did not adopt the resolution at the meeting; the vote authorized staff to proceed with the public-notice process and resolution drafting through EACOG.
