Earlham council tables police car storage project, asks staff for more bids

The Earlham City Council on Wednesday tabled discussion of a police vehicle storage project and directed staff to gather additional bids and cost-saving options before the October meeting.
Chief Stringham presented options related to the new fire-station expansion and vehicle storage, including the possibility of adding a lien tied to the expansion. A participant identified as Joel suggested installing garage doors on the north side of the griller building, but the council heard the quotes for those door installations were higher than expected.
Fire Chief Shawn Boyle said the stall currently in use could become available once the expansion is finished and that vehicles could be moved to make space; he also recommended seeking additional bids. Council members discussed alternatives that could reduce cost, including asking a local school shop class to assist with some building work, using a temporary double carport as an interim measure, or repurposing the carport at the public works building to shelter vehicles and equipment.
Councilmember Mudge moved and Bric Nelsen seconded a motion to table the police car storage discussion until the October meeting to allow staff time to collect more bids and explore lower-cost options. The motion passed unanimously.
Next step: staff will solicit additional bids and return to the council in October with estimates and recommended options.
