Earlham council approves health insurance renewal after premium increases

The Earlham City Council on Dec. 8 approved the renewal of the city’s health insurance rates despite a reported increase in premiums. Clerk Visser told the council that medical premiums rose 8.12% and dental premiums rose 4%.
Clerk Visser said the city will explore possible partnerships with the school or the county to seek lower costs going forward. After discussion, Visser moved and Miller seconded a motion to approve the increased rate; the motion passed by unanimous roll call.
Council members did not record any formal amendments to coverage or benefit levels at the meeting; the action recorded was approval of the renewal and a staff directive to explore options for cost containment.
