WJCC staff recommend 2026'27 nonresident tuition rates; board to act in August

Renee Ewing presented recommended nonresident tuition rates for the 2026'27 school year during the school board's July 7 work session.
Ewing said the recommended regular-education nonresident tuition rate for fiscal 2027 is $15,422, an increase of $10.99 (7.7%) compared with fiscal 2026. She said the recommended base special-education nonresident tuition rate is $26,103, an increase of $14.78 (6%) compared with fiscal 2026, and that additional costs may be charged depending on a student's unique service needs (speech therapy, occupational or physical therapy).
Ewing said these rates are calculated from the FY27 adopted budget and follow the same methodology used in prior years; she recommended the board review the rates and be prepared to take action at the Aug. 4 meeting.
Separately, Dr. Worley presented the annual update to policy JN (student fees, fines and charges), reporting no new fees but noting that driver-education fees will be set by the Virginia Department of Education in September and that students remain eligible for fee waivers; the proposed regulation will provide a seven-day window for families to dispute fines or charges.
Next steps: the board will be asked to take formal action on nonresident tuition rates at the August 4 meeting; staff will return with finalized driver-education fees once set by the state.
