The Hollywood City Commission proclaimed April 6—10, 2026, as National Community Development Week and heard a presentation from the city's community development staff about use of federal and local funds to support affordable housing and social services.
Commissioner Biederman read the proclamation and Brian (community development) and staff outlined local investments, saying the community development division received entitlement and disaster-recovery funds totaling $13,300,000 over the past five years. Staff described how those funds have supported infrastructure improvements, owner-occupied rehab, sidewalks, trees, senior-assistance programs, homeless services and nonprofit partnerships.
City staff said CDBG and HOME programs remain important federal funding sources for underserved populations and urged continuation of federal support. Community development personnel introduced colleagues and advisory-board members who assist with implementation of programs.
Commissioners used the city-comments portion of the meeting to raise district issues including traffic safety on Van Buren Street, the upcoming Salsa Fest, and a request to expedite consideration of a pending micro-schools ordinance.
The city manager also summarized the Hollywood Police Department's annual report (citing year-over-year declines in several crime categories) and introduced Mark Gambril as the new director of design and construction management.
