The Cary police chief updated trustees July 7 on newly enacted state legislation that will take effect Jan. 1, 2027, standardizing classifications, age limits and where e-bikes and similar micro-mobility devices may be operated.
The chief said the change will remove the village’s ability to set conflicting local rules but allows park districts and conservation authorities to adopt more stringent restrictions if they choose. Until the new law takes effect, the village retains enforcement authority under the existing local statute and the department is emphasizing public education this fall to alert parents and device users to safety risks and new requirements.
The chief said the department will consider a town-hall format to answer resident questions and will coordinate educational materials and website links for easy public access once state rules and guidance are finalized.
