Ashland honors firefighter promotions and recognizes student winners in America250 contests

On April 9 the Board of City Commissioners honored promotions in the Ashland Fire Department and recognized student winners in the America250 art and essay contests organized by the Daughters of the American Revolution.
The commission swore in and congratulated Firefighter Christian Manning, Firefighter Trey Manifax, Captain Phil Davis and Engineer Zach Moore, noting each member’s certifications and prior service. Officials said the promoted members will be assigned to specific battalions and platoons.
Theresa Hardesty of the Daughters of the American Revolution, speaking for the America250 Commission, said the contests involved more than 250 entries from city students and included categories from kindergarten through 12th grade. Linda Cannon and DAR volunteers announced winners in banner, poster, stamp, poetry and essay categories and described follow-on competitions at state, divisional and national levels.
“We got a lot of help from the city of Ashland, from the America 250 Commission, from Visit Aky, and we're just so excited to be able to honor these kids,” Theresa Hardesty said.
The commission also heard a school presentation about the Heritage on the River event, scheduled for a Saturday with activities from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., musical performances, reenactments and exhibits from city departments.
The ceremony portion concluded with group photos and recognition of families and students.
