Police present Warren Street speed counts; 81 mph outlier flagged as likely error

At the safety committee meeting police presented the quarterly traffic report for Warren Street and flagged both the volume and a questionable outlier reading.
The study covered two separate two‑week periods. Eastbound counts (June 3–17) recorded 49,293 vehicle passes with an average speed of 17 mph and 6,575 instances above the posted 25 mph limit; a single reading logged 81 mph, which officers said they could not corroborate on camera and suspect was a data error. Westbound counts (June 19–30) recorded 22,400 vehicles with an average speed of 19 mph, a highest recorded speed of 49 mph and 4,939 readings above the posted limit.
Committee members asked for a breakdown of speeds above the limit and the police said they will provide the raw data and a more detailed analysis to the council and publish it online. One resident asked whether data accounts for state trooper patterns; the department said the count is aggregated and that further detail will be provided on request.
The department said enforcement discretion is used for minor exceedances and that officers typically focus on speeds substantially over posted limits; officers also noted that camera malfunctions or sign issues can create anomalies in automated counts. The police asked staff to post the full report for council review.
