Berkeley Heights Board adjourns to executive session to conduct superintendent interviews

The Berkeley Heights Board of Education voted to adjourn to an executive session at 6:18 p.m. to conduct superintendent interviews, saying the interviews would be held in conjunction with the New Jersey School Boards Association. The board announced it expected the executive session to last about three and a half hours.

Board president (S1) read a resolution citing the New Jersey Open Public Meetings Act (NJSA 10:4-6) and listed the types of matters that may be discussed in closed session, including personnel matters and attorney-client privileged topics. “Superintendent interviews will be held in executive session in conjunction with the NJSBA,” the president said.

The motion to enter executive session was made and seconded and then put to a vote; the chair announced the board would adjourn to executive session at 6:18 p.m. The meeting returned to public session at 10:02 p.m. A subsequent motion to adjourn the meeting passed and the chair announced the time as 10:04 p.m.

Before and after the executive session, the board read standard public-comment procedures, asking speakers to state their name and town, limiting remarks to three minutes, and noting that personnel comments are discouraged and will not receive board responses. The board recorded no in-person public commenters and asked a district staff member, identified in the transcript as Mr. Marks, whether anyone was attending online.

The board said that minutes of any executive-session discussion would be disclosed when confidentiality is no longer applicable. No further substantive public debate, votes on policy items, or agenda items were recorded on the public transcript of this meeting.
