Travis Unified board moves December meeting to allow swearing-in; staff clarifies parent notification policy (Ed. Code 48980)

The Travis Unified School District board voted to change the date of its December regular meeting so that the county and state will have certified the November election and returning and new board members can be sworn in.

Tiffany, speaking for district staff, explained that the county and state typically certify the November election on the second Friday in December and the board's previously scheduled meeting fell before that certification. The board moved the regular meeting to the following week; the motion was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.

There were no public comments on the agenda. During discussion of the consent calendar, board members thanked district office staff for summarizing policy and contract changes and noted the complexity and cost of operating the district. One board member asked Tiffany to explain paragraph 2 of policy 5145.6 for the public.

Tiffany said policy 5145.6 paragraph 2 is the notice of rights and responsibilities for parents and guardians and cited Education Code 48980. "It's saying that at the beginning of every academic school year, these notifications will be provided to our families, electronically or by snail mail, and that will go out to parents and guardians every single year," she said. Tiffany added that the policy language was reviewed and streamlined to remove redundant wording.

The board did not take any substantive policy votes during this exchange; the only formal actions in the recorded segments were approval of the agenda and the schedule change to the December meeting.
