Neighbors push for deer-crossing signage; MDOT and Washoe County to review flashing beacons

Joel Martin provided the council an update on efforts to install deer-crossing signs and possible flashing beacons on state right-of-way.

"She's saying that she's gonna bring it up to her superiors because they have a limited budget, but they're gonna see if they can find us some money to put some flashers on our signs," Joel said, describing discussions with a county contact, Nova Simpson. Council members and residents discussed the need for a site review, and the Chair noted that because the roadway is state right-of-way the project must go through MDOT district offices before local work proceeds; the county may then grant approval for local installations.

Members suggested solar-powered beacons where power is unavailable and picked potential locations near exit ramps for initial install. Residents emphasized community meetings and public engagement to show local support. One member noted that wildlife fencing along the freeway had diverted animal movements and may be raising crossings at other nearby locations.

Separately, members briefed the council on an upcoming regional fire-services study community information session (19th at the Northern Nevada Public Health Conference Room) and on efforts to recruit transportation and county agencies (including RTC) to present at future meetings. The county is also exploring hiring a social-media communications specialist to improve outreach to HOAs and commuter populations.

No formal vote or ordinance was introduced; staff were asked to follow up with MDOT for a site review and to report back when a public meeting or funding decision is scheduled.
