The City Council adopted Resolution 33 of 2026 on May 26, proclaiming June 19, 2026 as Juneteenth Day in the City of Natchitoches. Mayor Ronnie Williams Jr. read the proclamation noting Juneteenth's historical significance as the date enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were informed of their freedom in 1865.
"Now, therefore, I, Ronnie Williams Junior, mayor of the city of Natchitoches, Louisiana, do hereby proclaim 06/19/2026 as Juneteenth day in the city of Natchitoches and encourage all citizens to participate in activities and observances that celebrate freedom, heritage, unity, and the continued pursuit of justice for all," the proclamation read.
Council members noted plans for a parade on Friday, June 19, community events on June 20 and related activities including a parade, music and vendors. The council approved the proclamation by roll call vote.
