The board heard staff say the total pilot purchase is approximately $426,514.63 and that 35j will also fund required teacher training in structured literacy and the science of reading.
Ms. Linden, the district ELA lead, said the two vendors under consideration serve different models: Wit & Wisdom pairs with a separate, systematic phonics program (the district would likely standardize on UFLI for phonics if Wit & Wisdom is selected), while Bookworms is a more comprehensive, all‑in‑one program that includes phonics and decoding components. She said both curricula include diverse, culturally affirming materials and that the pilot will report results to trustees.
Trustees asked for more time to review materials; Linden offered digital access and said she could provide hard copies to trustees. The purchase was approved by the board (vote 6–1). Staff said adoption‑decision purchases following the pilot would also be covered by 35j funds if a curriculum is recommended.
