Eagle Township approves $85,400 repave of Little Lake Drive; township to cover full cost

At its May 19 meeting, the Eagle Township Board voted to replace and repave Little Lake Drive and authorized the supervisor to sign a contract with the Clinton County Road Commission for a quoted price of $85,400.

Clinton County Road Commission Director Doug Steffen gave the board an update on Little Lake Drive's condition and maintenance options. Several property owners who live on Little Lake Drive told the board they opposed a special assessment to pay for repaving, saying the road has not had maintenance beyond patching since its original paving in 1991 and has been used by large vehicles and for heavy-equipment storage during State Road reconstruction.

Trustee Rob Currie moved, and Supervisor Troy Stroud supported, a motion "for the Eagle Township Board to cover 100 percent of the expense to replace and repave Little Lake Drive at the cost of $85,400 as quoted by the Clinton County Road Commission" on the grounds that the road serves two school districts, had no regular maintenance, is 35 years old and was originally built at 3-inch thickness. The roll call vote listed Currie, Trustee Michelle Hoppes, Treasurer Chelsea Hoppes, Clerk Laurie Briggs-Dudley and Supervisor Stroud as voting yes; there were no no votes. The motion carried and the board authorized signing the contract with the Clinton County Road Commission.

The board did not record a separate funding source other than authorizing township payment. Little Lake Drive property owners had explicitly stated opposition to an assessment; the board's action removes the need to levy a special assessment for this work. The township will now proceed with executing the contract with the county road commission; the minutes did not specify a construction start date or funding subaccount for the $85,400 expenditure.

Next steps: the supervisor was authorized to sign the agreement with the Clinton County Road Commission to begin repaving under the quoted terms.
