Board approves Edmentum contract, Golden Valley kiosk purchase and UC Merced outreach agreement; summer school starts June 10 with program changes

The Merced Union High School District board unanimously approved several action items affecting summer programming and instructional supports.
The board approved a purchase to install kitchen equipment and service kiosks at Golden Valley High School using a piggyback contract (Sweetwater Union High School District bid no. 23-2847DP) to complete a kitchen infrastructure grant project. Trustees praised the use of grant funds and the near-term application to campus facilities.
Trustees also approved an agreement with UC Merced’s Center for Educational Partnerships (CEP) to continue outreach and college-readiness work for four comprehensive high schools. Administration said CEP had previously provided services at no cost but requested a cost share after reductions in grant funding; the partnership will focus on a-g completion, FAFSA support and increased college eligibility for participating cohorts. Administrators said they would explore additional opportunities such as summer research experiences for STEM students through UC Merced.
The board approved the Edmentum contract (presented by district staff) for districtwide use in credit recovery and remediation. Administrators explained that summer remediation will again rely on the Edmentum platform with in-person teacher support for exams and student assistance; however, the district will not offer math remediation in-person this summer because historical data showed low completion rates for math during summer sessions (administration reported last year had 1,589 no credits; 30% of those no-credit records were from math courses).
Summer school calendar details presented to the board: staff will report June 10 for orientation; summer instruction will begin June 10 with a last enrollment scheduling date of June 23. Site leadership for the summer was named: Phaedra Hoffman will serve as principal at Merced High School (also serving El Capitan and Golden Valley), Tiffany Gossman will be principal at Viewhat Colony High School (serving Atwater High and Viewhat Colony), Mr. Reese will serve as migrant education principal, and Brianna Escalera will serve as associate principal for Livingston High School (LHS). For migrant education, the district will send 35 migrant students to a seven-day program at Merced College offering three classes for college credit and a celebratory trip.
All contract and agreement motions carried unanimously at the meeting.
