Merced Union High board weighs changes to valedictorian and salutatorian selection methods

District staff returned to the board with recommended options to modernize the district’s valedictorian and salutatorian policy after months of internal discussion. The staff presenter outlined three choices: keep the highest GPA as valedictorian and second-highest as salutatorian; adopt a percentage system (for example, top 1% valedictorian, top 3% salutatorian); or modify the current policy (for example, raise GPA baselines or alter which courses count toward GPA).
The presentation highlighted complications that make the current system hard to interpret: multiple GPA calculations on students’ transcripts (total weighted GPA, academic GPA, UC/CSU calculations that count a limited number of honors courses), variability in whether colleges weight certain classes, and the effect of transfers and early graduates. The presenter noted the district currently calculates based on eight semesters and historically allows only five honors classes to be weighted in certain calculations.
Board members asked detailed questions about enrollment cutoffs (when a student becomes part of a cohort eligible for honors), how to treat college courses taken before ninth grade, and whether requiring demonstrated proficiency on state tests should be part of eligibility. A majority of the district leadership team favored option 1 (single highest GPA) in initial discussions. Trustees expressed interest in an academic-GPA-based approach and in seeking student input: one trustee suggested a roundtable with recent valedictorians to understand the student perspective.
Staff said an amended administrative regulation (AR) would be drafted and shared, with discussion of grandfathering provisions for the class of 2029. No formal policy change was adopted at the meeting; the board provided direction to refine the AR and return with final language.
