Berkeley Heights Board adjourns to executive session for superintendent interviews

The Berkeley Heights Board of Education adjourned to an executive session to conduct superintendent interviews, the chair said, and indicated the session would last approximately four hours.

The chair read a resolution citing the Open Public Meetings Act, NJSA 10:4-6, listing permitted reasons to exclude the public — including personnel matters and pending litigation — and said, “Superintendent interviews will be held in executive session in conjunction with the NJSBA.” The board recorded the time of the move to executive session as 6:18 p.m.

The board’s adequate-notice statement was read at the outset: a special-board meeting notice was sent to the Star Ledger and the Courier News on 08/07/2024, provided to all schools and PTO presidents, given to the BHEA president, posted at the Administration Building, provided to the public library, and filed with the municipal clerk.

During roll call, names called included Mister Bradford, Mister Hyman, Miss Jolley, Miss Connor and Miss Stanley; the transcript records affirmative responses of “Here.” After the executive session, a motion to return to public session was made; a voice vote was recorded and the chair noted the time as 9:56 p.m.

The chair opened the public comment period and reviewed the ground rules — speakers should state their name and town or school, comments are limited to three minutes, personnel matters are discouraged — and asked the meeting secretary whether any participants were online. Mister Marks checked and was told there were no online participants. The chair noted there were no in-person commenters either.

With no public comments, the board moved to adjourn. The chair called a voice vote, recorded the ayes, and declared the meeting adjourned.
