Veterans Commission seeks city support for Aug. 7 Purple Heart recognition event

Steve Carey, president of the Spanish Fort Veterans Commission, told the council the commission and the South Alabama Veterans Council are organizing an Aug. 7 event to honor Purple Heart recipients and to engage youth and families with veterans’ stories.
Carey said the event will gather regional veteran-service organizations and noted the commission has invited Purple Heart recipients, including centenarians, for a private reception followed by a civic-center program. He requested council and staff help with marketing and outreach to local schools and youth groups so students can attend and hear veterans' stories.
Council members thanked Carey and offered to share information through city social media and the mayor’s summer marketing intern. Carey said the commission will include partners such as university and service-organization speakers and that the organizers will provide event flyers and digital materials for distribution.
City staff and council indicated willingness to assist with outreach; no formal action or city funding commitment was made at the meeting.
