North Miami council adopts resolution on ‘safe and trustworthy’ municipal AI use

The North Miami City Council unanimously approved a resolution endorsing the "safe and trustworthy" use of artificial intelligence by city administration.
Councilwoman Esta Mae Ervin, who sponsored the measure, said the resolution was meant to set a foundation for city policies and procedures governing staff use of AI. "The reason why I brought this resolution, I thought it was important that we have policies and procedures in place to use AI," Ervin said. The council discussed whether the resolution could conflict with any state or federal guidance; the city attorney clarified the document is a resolution for internal policy direction and is not an ordinance.
Council members noted the city manager and staff were already providing training and looking at internal policies. One council member asked whether adopting the resolution could put the city at odds with future state-level restrictions; the city attorney advised the resolution is nonbinding and that the city would comply with any preemptive state or federal law.
The council voted to adopt the resolution by voice vote (recorded as 4–0). Next steps identified at the meeting included directing city administration to continue developing training and a staff policy for AI use.
