Community Learning Connections (CLC) staff updated trustees on a year of programs supporting students and families and highlighted a grant focused on suicide awareness at Tecumseh High School.
Amanda Gibson, CLC executive director, summarized CLC services including Friday food packs, back-to-school shopping nights, warmth-without-wallets holiday support, and partnerships bringing mobile science labs and summer read-and-feed events. "Community Learning Connection's mission is to engage, support, and empower students and their families," Gibson told the board, describing a 30-year partnership with Tecumseh Public Schools.
Diana Staten, outgoing graduation coach at Tecumseh High School, described a building-level grant for suicide-awareness training and student-led prevention work. She said multidisciplinary teams have implemented trainings and student programs; the THS SOS (Students of Support) group and staff completed virtual suicide-awareness modules and are organizing events such as a collaboration with the lacrosse team to "stick it to stigma." Staten said 13 staff completed the Michigan virtual training threshold at THS and that student-led messaging and daily announcements are ongoing.
CLC family-and-community outreach coordinator Heather Frankel described family nights that include childcare, dinner and a stipend for families completing programs; the organization also runs the WOCS girls program and two groups of 10 girls each this year. Gibson invited trustees to support CLC's main fundraiser, the Main Mingle, scheduled for May 16 at the Tecumseh Golf Club.
Next steps: CLC will continue programming and return with updates; trustees thanked staff and recognized the programs' contributions to student wellbeing.
