Facilities update: pool demo plans, tennis-court bid and sinking-fund spending outlined

Operations director Josh Mason gave trustees a detailed facilities update that covered current repair needs, larger capital projects under design and planned use of sinking-fund dollars.
Mason said the high-school softball dugout has structural block damage and a temporary fenced dugout and turf have been installed while bids are solicited. He described ongoing design and state-plan submission for pool demolition and repurposing the adjacent locker-room/mechanical space into classroom and restroom space once the pool is removed. "We're looking at how do we repurpose that space and finish off that into the building once the pool is removed," Mason said.
On specific projects, Mason reported the low combined bid for resurfacing the high-school tennis courts at $837,715 and said the district has been recommended for a Lenawee Community Foundation grant (staff characterized a possible $200,000 award pending the foundation's board vote). He also summarized sinking-fund planning: the packet showed a multi-year capital list with roughly $6.3 million of projects budgeted through 2028 and noted that design and soft costs are still being refined.
Other operational items: Mason reported that a $107,000 grant opportunity to fund hydration-station replacements was reopened by the state and had been resubmitted; the middle-school elevator jack replacement is scheduled to begin June 1 with an expected two-week timeline; and bids for a new outdoor track RFQ/P were issued late but remain on schedule for review.
Mason told the board the district has spent part of sinking-fund allocations on selective demolition and design work and is monitoring soft-cost adjustments as actual bids arrive. Trustees asked about budget reconciliations and Chromebook procurement being proposed against sinking-fund monies. Mason confirmed a plan to use E-Rate funding for some technology line items and requested board direction before the next approval step.
Next steps: staff will return with final bid awards, refined sinking-fund spreadsheets showing updated totals, and any grant award confirmations.
