Plainfield board places Superintendent Rashaan K. Hassan on paid administrative leave and appoints acting superintendent

The Plainfield Board of Education on Thursday placed Superintendent Rashaan K. Hassan on paid administrative leave effective immediately and appointed an acting superintendent to carry out the duties of the office until the board determines otherwise.

The board attorney read the two walk-on resolutions into the record, saying the board "is authorized to manage and supervise the affairs of the school district pursuant to applicable laws" and that, "Rashaan K. Hassan, superintendent of schools, is hereby placed on paid administrative leave effective immediately and continuing until further action of the board." The attorney also read the resolution appointing an acting superintendent and said compensation and stipend would be negotiated.

The two resolutions were added as walk-on items and were approved as part of the consent agenda after a roll-call vote. Vice President Webb moved the consent agenda and Commissioner Douglas seconded. The board secretary read back the roll call showing the consent agenda passed; the secretary noted recorded no votes on at least one walk-on item (K-14) by Commissioners Malone and Andrews while the remainder of commissioners voted in favor. The attorney confirmed the superintendent leave and acting appointment were included among the approved resolutions.

The resolutions do not specify a duration beyond "until further action of the board," and do not list a named acting superintendent or the stipend amount in the text read into the record. The attorney said the acting superintendent "shall exercise the authority of the superintendent of schools as permitted by law and board policy" and that compensation would be negotiated.
