Redevelopment board raises 2027 education grant pool and approves Maryville project scope change

The Hobart Redevelopment Commission voted on March 16 to raise the 2027 education and workforce training grant pool from $30,000 to $50,000 and approved a scope change for a Maryville School Corporation project that shifts planned outdoor food boxes to indoor multipurpose distribution cabinets.

The change was introduced by staff and a motion to increase the 2027 grant amount passed by voice vote. The commission then heard a letter, read by Kate (the board's new developer contact), from Terrell Taylor, construction trades instructor at Maryville High School. The letter said the revised project will allow students to design, build and install eight indoor cabinets, one at each participating school, to store and distribute food, clothing and hygiene items while providing hands-on workforce training.

Staff told the board the revision keeps the project within the originally approved budget and addresses earlier concerns about food spoilage, vandalism and liability associated with outdoor distribution boxes. Kate said the indoor approach "eliminates any liability issue" tied to outdoor units and provides a better learning environment for students.

Board members asked whether the scope change required an additional funding allocation; staff confirmed the revised plan fits the approved grant amount. A motion to accept the revised application was made, seconded and approved unanimously.

The commission's vote means Maryville can move forward with the updated design and construction under the existing grant terms. Staff indicated they received the revised documentation by email and will proceed with project oversight and any required reporting.

The commission also approved a separate motion to increase the 2027 grant pool to $50,000; board members said the larger pool is intended to expand opportunities for local workforce and education partnerships.
