Montgomery County schools detail $3M summer capital program, say Burt Innovation Center nears completion

District operations staff told the Montgomery County Board of Education on July 17 that crews are managing about 130 summer capital projects totaling more than $3,000,000 across 37 school sites.
The operations presenter said the projects include 37 HVAC and electrical upgrades, 28 building renovations, 24 site-improvement projects such as sidewalks and curb cuts for ADA access, 23 flooring jobs and 18 interior finishing projects including painting and acoustical work. "We're managing approximately 130 projects totaling over $3,000,000 across 37 distinct locations over the summer," the presenter said.
Among larger projects, staff reported the Burt Innovation Center is approaching 90% completion, with signage installed and a ribbon-cutting ceremony planned in about three weeks pending final inspections by the state fire marshal. "We will be meeting with the state fire marshal to get all of our final inspections completed over the next couple of weeks," the presenter said.
Freedom school work is also nearing completion: staff described stripping and waxing of floors, continued furniture installation and other finishes at about 97–98% complete. Officials said they are tracking for an August opening and plan a second public construction tour in three weeks.
At Minglewood, an asphalt paving and parking expansion project is approximately 60% complete. Staff said the project will increase car capacity from about 110 to 170 spaces, which they expect will reduce vehicle backups on Cunningham Lane by roughly 60 cars.
The district said several accessibility upgrades were completed in the last six weeks, including restroom remodels and added sidewalks and curb cuts to improve safe access to playgrounds and portable classrooms. The presenter emphasized the work is intended to be finished before the start of school so buildings and sites are ready for students and staff.
Board members asked no substantive follow-up questions during the presentation, and staff concluded the report by noting the district will continue construction oversight and finalize inspections ahead of the school year.
