Sergeant honored after vest and team training helped him survive on-duty shooting

Chairman Barrow opened the meeting by recognizing Sergeant Underwood of the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office and the county Special Response Team for their role in an October incident that left Underwood with a damaged bulletproof vest but alive.
Underwood told the board that the incident was the result of a team effort and credited training, equipment and family support. “What we do only matters if the individuals and the victims of domestic violence had the courage to stand up or report it,” he said, adding thanks to the sheriff’s leadership and to the commissioners for funding equipment that helped bring officers home to their families.
Commissioners praised the team’s service and noted the relationship between equipment purchases and officer safety. The board posed for photos with Underwood and his family and again thanked the Special Response Team for its work.
No formal action was required; commissioners used the recognition to reaffirm support for equipment and training budgets for law enforcement.
