Teachers present middle‑school 'Portrait of a Graduate' alignment and classroom checklist

At the April 13 committee meeting, two middle‑school teachers from JS Wilson, Jess Sabaccino and Kelsey Richards, presented a framework to align instruction across the district’s three middle schools with the Portrait of a Graduate attributes.
Sabaccino, a sixth‑grade ELA teacher, and Richards, a seventh‑grade math teacher, said the project mapped school practices and programs to six attributes—career readiness, character, communicator, adaptability and flexibility, contributor, and collaborator. They described specific classroom practices and curricula tied to each attribute, such as Naviance career readiness lessons, PBIS systems for character development, Envision math performance tasks, HMH ELA curriculum samples and regular service‑learning days.
The presenters said the project produced a teacher checklist and small reference cards intended for daily classroom use so teachers can signal which Portrait attribute a lesson targets. They recommended a teacher‑led in‑service next year to introduce the checklist after principals review and support the rollout. The presentation concluded with an offer to share materials with faculty and to pilot the checklist in teacher in‑service sessions.
The committee received the presentation as an informational item and had no public questions.
