Council questions ATV highway use; public works updates and police equipment issue noted

During general communications at its June 15 meeting, the Wisner City Council discussed vehicle operation on public highways and received a brief update on public works and police equipment.
Councilwoman Cathy Gobar told the council she had seen four ATV/Gators driving down the highway toward the dump and asked whether that activity was against the law. Chief of Police Doug Salmen replied, "It is against the law unless they are equipped to be on the highway and the only way he will know is if they would get pulled over," and explained lawful highway operation requires equipment such as blinkers, headlights and a dim light; he also noted local liability and insurance requirements. Mayor Soden and Chief Salmen expressed concern about electric mopeds and said state-level clarification is needed.
Randy Woldt reported that new steps were installed at the community pool that day and that some pieces for the storm sewer near True Value have arrived and been installed. Chief Salmen additionally reported that Sergeant Rhodus’s police car remains in for repairs because the light bar control head shorted out and needs replacement.
The council took no formal action on these informational items and proceeded to adjourn.
