Umatilla council appoints Christie Pankratz to vacant seat after three-candidate interview

The Umatilla City Council on July 7 appointed Christie Pankratz to fill a vacancy in Council Position 1 after interviewing three candidates.

Council opened interviews for the seat that became vacant when the prior councilor moved out of the area. Applicants Caritza, Imelda Arasuno and Christie Pankratz each gave brief introductions and answered a standard set of questions about priorities for Umatilla, including housing, homelessness, infrastructure and community engagement. Caritza emphasized social-work experience and bilingual outreach; Imelda Arasuno cited diversity and housing access; Pankratz highlighted long-standing involvement with local schools and community groups.

Following candidate presentations and a period of deliberation, a councilor moved to appoint Christie Pankratz. The motion was seconded and carried by roll call. The council announced Pankratz will serve in the seat until the next general election. Pankratz then took the oath of office before the council and assumed the chair on the dais.

City staff said the appointee will assume the predecessor's committee assignments; council subsequently moved and approved that assignment, confirming Pankratz on the finance committee and the community development subcommittee.

Why it matters: The appointment fills a council vacancy ahead of a fall election and ensures representation and committee continuity as the city moves forward on annexations, code updates and public-safety initiatives.
