Students pitch MechDyne–MCC partnership in 3DE case challenge to Marshalltown board

Students in the district’s 3DE cohort presented the results of a 9.2 case challenge to the Marshalltown school board on Nov. 17, recommending that MechDyne collaborate with Marshalltown Community College (MCC) to develop a local talent pipeline.
Student presenters described MCC’s flexible scheduling and technical offerings in network management and computer science, arguing those elements would allow MechDyne to recruit workers who can travel and maintain flexible schedules. "We think that MechDyne should collaborate with MCC because MCC offers a couple courses called Network Management and computer science in it," one student presenter said. Students explained they worked with MechDyne as a business partner during the class and that mentorship and coaching were part of their judging and presentation process.
Program staff summarized the 3DE model (case studies and case challenges across 9th grade) and described upcoming events: the next case challenge (9.3) will feature Marshalltown Company and a culminating event is scheduled for Dec. 18 at 9:30 a.m. in the Marshalltown Performing Arts Center. The board and audience were invited to attend.
Board members asked practical questions about whether students could move directly from high school into MechDyne positions or whether additional college coursework would be preferable; students and partners said college coursework at MCC would likely produce higher‑quality candidates but that dual‑enrollment and pathway options could be explored.
