Marshalltown auditorium foundation seeks funds to modernize performing-arts center; $100,000 lead gift announced

The foundation outlined a scope that includes replacing analog speakers with modern line‑array systems, converting decades‑old stage lighting to LED, replacing 40‑year‑old draperies and installing electronically operated smoke hatches for fire safety. "We're right around $1.4 million is what we need to do to get the speakers lighting as well as the draperies," a foundation representative said.
Foundation leaders said the campaign is structured as a split cost for work inside the auditorium shell (50/50 with the district) and foundation‑funded costs for areas outside the shell such as the lobby. The foundation reported an early lead commitment of $100,000 from the Ankaiser Trust and said commitments since then put the foundation roughly $140,000–$150,000 beyond that initial pledge. The group is targeting $700,000 in private fundraising for its portion of the work.
The board watched a short video with alumni testimonials — including messages from several Marshalltown graduates who called the auditorium an important community and educational resource — and the foundation outlined donation options via the district website store and an upcoming mailing. Foundation organizers said major technical work could be staged as soon as next summer and noted some work (smoke hatches) might take place over the winter break to address fire‑safety concerns.
Board members asked about donation logistics and timing; foundation leaders said a formal letter and online giving links would be available to make it easier for donors to contribute.
