Marshalltown board adopts plan specs, moves Miller Middle School early bid packages forward

The Marshalltown Community School District board voted unanimously on Nov. 17 to adopt the plans, specifications, form of contract and estimated costs for early bid packages for the Miller Middle School project and approved Contract Amendment No. 2 to proceed with selected early packages. Secretary Randy Denham told the board that no written comments were received during the public hearing and that the elevator package will be re‑bid after receiving no bids last week.

"Estimate cost for the elevator package is 385,000," Denham said. Board members then approved the resolution to adopt the early bid package documents and moved forward with the project. A construction representative reporting to the board said the district received competitive bids for two early packages — glazing and precast — and that those bids came in under the project’s projected budgets. "We're about just shy of a million dollars under budget for the precast, and I think we're $80,000 less than glazing," the presenter said.

The board voted to approve Contract Amendment No. 2, which updates contractual scopes and budgets for the approved early packages. Board members asked whether the elevator package could be rebid and were told it is currently out to bid and expected to return to the board on Dec. 1. The motion to approve the resolution and the contract amendment each carried on unanimous votes.

Next steps include finalizing the remaining bid packages and returning additional awards to the board as bids are received. The district said it will continue to monitor bid results and project contingencies as the work progresses.
