Mayor Rich Murray read a proclamation declaring October Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Albert Lea at the council meeting on Oct. 13, recognizing survivors, victim‑service providers and community organizations. The proclamation noted statewide statistics, saying that in 2024 “at least 24 lives were taken in the state of Minnesota due to domestic violence,” and urged citizens to participate in local activities.
Maureen Williams Zelenak of the Freeborn County Crime Victims Crisis Center said the center will host a “Walk to End Domestic Violence” on Wednesday, Oct. 15, starting at Central Park at 5 p.m. and walking to New Denmark Park. She said the center has a limited number of purple T‑shirts, yard signs and “purple lights” available for residents and encouraged people to contact the crisis center for signs and lighting. Mayor Murray presented the proclamation and arranged for a photo with the center’s representatives.
Councilors and attendees noted they were wearing purple in support of survivors and highlighted local resources the crisis center offers for those seeking help.
