Westbury board waives five‑day notice, approves amended settlement and several consent items

The Westbury Union Free School District Board of Education on April 21 unanimously approved a motion to waive the board’s five‑day notice requirement for one meeting-only resolution, approved an amendment to a previously authorized settlement agreement, and carried a block vote on multiple consent items.

The board’s district counsel read aloud the waiver resolution, saying, “The board hereby waives the requirements of board policy 23‑42 for this board meeting only to allow for a resolution to be presented with less than 5 days notice.” The motion passed by roll call with all trustees voting aye.

Counsel then presented an amended settlement agreement and read the resolution: “Be it resolved that the board of education hereby approves a settlement agreement and release and authorizes the board president or his designee to execute such agreement.” The board voted unanimously to approve the amendment; counsel said the amendment was needed to ensure the parent’s legal name as used in the agreement matched official documents.

The board also approved minutes from prior meetings and a block of consent agenda items after a motion and second; those motions carried unanimously. Several agenda items (7D, 7G–7L and 13B) were withdrawn from tonight’s vote because exact dollar amounts or other details were not yet available.

During public comment, resident Chester McGibbon questioned the Ed4Jobs/Ed4Careers item on the agenda and asked for clarity about listed course fees and the program’s revenue share. District staff said the item represents a proposed, grant‑funded virtual offering hosted by the Westbury Learning Center, with the Department of Defense covering course fees for eligible service members and veterans and a roughly 20% host‑site share for the district; staff said projected revenues are speculative and not reflected in the current budget.

Before the meeting recessed into a later executive session on personnel, the board president reminded the community of the May 19 vote on the 2026–27 budget and board elections. The board adjourned after returning from executive session.
