Council discusses options for Tremonton Justice Court and favors keeping local services

City attorney Dustin Erickson (speaker 9) briefed the Tremonton City Council on options for the Tremonton Justice Court, presenting three possible paths: maintain the court locally, interlocal with Box Elder County (moving cases to Brigham City), or pursue an interlocal agreement with Garland so Tremonton and Garland could share court services while keeping local access.

Dustin told the council that moving the court to Brigham City could require officers to spend a day in Brigham on trials and could increase prosecutorial and public‑defender costs. "Those 4 officers would be spending the day in Brigham City, which would either require overtime pay or leave the city with less security here," Dustin said. He also warned revenue from citation fines and judge wages would shift under different arrangements and that some prosecutorial costs may increase in higher‑volume county courts.

Councilors and staff discussed tradeoffs including convenience for residents (short visits vs. multi‑hour trips to Brigham City), the ability to handle local compliance matters informally, and the difficulty of quantifying net cost changes. Garland officials and a court clerk (Laurie Weiser, speaker 13) were referenced as possible partners; staff said Garland had agreed to consider the arrangement and would discuss it at its council meeting.

Councilors expressed a preference for retaining a court in Tremonton but asked staff to continue exploring interlocal terms with Garland that might preserve local access while sharing administrative duties. No formal vote or ordinance was taken; the council asked staff to return with terms if negotiations with Garland proceed.
