Board approves three classroom grants and advances policy changes to first reading

At its Nov. 11 meeting the West Salem School Board approved three board grants recommended by the grant review committee and advanced a package of policy updates on first reading.
Caitlin (S6), chairing the grant review committee, said the committee unanimously recommended: a $2,200 sensory walk project for Emily Kalinicos; a $4,097 Apple Vision Pro package (with spare battery and case) for Michelle Schwier; and a $1,170.47 STEM light table package for Laura Wagner. The board approved the grants by voice vote.
The consent agenda passed as presented and included minutes from Oct. 28 and Oct. 29 meetings, invoices, co‑curricular assistant basketball recommendations and the announced retirement of Patrick Barr after more than 35 years with the district. No objections were raised during the consent vote.
Board members also voted to approve the first reading of a bundle of policy changes (Volume 33) containing technical, legal and district‑recommended changes across roughly 42 policies. One member asked for clarification about policy 7310 (disposition of personal property); staff said the struck procedural language had been a district procedure rather than policy and therefore was removed from the policy text.
No final policy adoptions occurred at this meeting; the first reading was approved and will proceed through the district's policy adoption process.
