Committee moves to create subcommittee after debate over library-materials complaint procedure

Staff (Speaker 7) explained that 2522 contains a walk-through complaint process carried over from previous library procedures, while 9130 is a broader catch-all complaint policy. Committee members recommended a deeper review by a subcommittee before making a final decision. Committee member (Speaker 2) proposed that, if a complaint is filed against material, the material should be immediately removed from circulation while the review is underway; several members agreed and asked staff to change the draft language to require removal pending investigation.
Elaine (Speaker 8) objected to language that sent human growth and development materials to an ad hoc advisory committee and recommended sending such complaints to the curriculum committee instead; the committee accepted that change and instructed staff to change "advisory" to "curriculum."
The committee agreed to create a subcommittee to examine policy 2522 in depth. The subcommittee will include the chairs (or members) of the policy, education services and curriculum committees, administrators Sarah and Jenny, Jason (librarian/administrator) and a representative librarian. Jason (Staff member) was asked to coordinate the subcommittee.
Action: staff will draft revised 2522 language to immediately remove challenged materials from circulation during review, change item c in 9130 to send human growth and development complaints to the curriculum committee, and convene the subcommittee to complete a deeper review.
