Mountainside council approves routine donations, appointments and payments; denies permit-fee waiver

During its April 1 work session the Borough of Mountainside council approved a bundle of routine actions and took several administrative steps.
Council approved two gift checks for Deerfield School graduation honorees — $300 for the valedictorian and $200 for the salutatorian — with a formal resolution to follow. The council also approved annual donations of $500 each for the Memorial Day Parade, the PTO Fall Festival, PTO Trunk or Treat and the Rescue Squad Spooky Trail; a resolution will be prepared at the next meeting to effect those payments.
The council approved authorization to auction surplus property including two Ford Explorers, miscellaneous lights and sirens, vehicle parts, landscaping equipment and phones deemed no longer useful to the borough. The Administrator recommended appointments for part-time temporary staff and seasonal recreation staff; Justyna Diaz will assume the role of Tax Collector and former CFO Jill Goode will provide mentoring as needed. The recreation and building departments will be authorized to issue specified refunds (for canceled registrations and an unnecessary inspection) by resolution at the next meeting.
Council declined a request from Union County’s contractor to waive a permit fee of $29,736 for major renovation work at Watchung Stables, leaving the fee in place. The council also approved bills and claims by resolution authorizing warrants totaling $765,350.32. There was no public comment; the meeting was adjourned at 8:15 P.M.
