Mayor announces $191.3 million recovery for Port of Alaska modernization

In the mayor’s report to the Anchorage Assembly on July 7, the mayor announced that the Municipality had reached a settlement with the U.S. Maritime Administration that will bring $180 million to the Port of Alaska, in addition to $11.3 million awarded in 2024 — a total recovery of $191.3 million to be applied to Port of Alaska modernization construction costs.
The mayor framed the agreement as the conclusion of a long-running legal dispute over faulty design and construction that began in 2013, and said the funds plus other grants and state investment will reduce future shipping surcharges for residents. "This total recovery of $191,300,000 will go directly toward construction costs for the Port Of Alaska modernization program," the mayor said.
The mayor thanked federal and state advocates and municipal attorneys, and noted concurrent construction milestones at Terminal 1 (pile driving) and other downtown infrastructure projects. She also cited Operation Summer Heat, a multiagency enforcement action that yielded more arrests and larger seizures of illegal drugs compared with the previous year, and said those efforts will continue.
What’s next: Administration said the port modernization will proceed with the recovered funds and previously secured state and federal grants; the assembly heard the report and moved on to other agenda items.
