Commissioners authorize letter supporting Charlotte Hall Library renovation grant

The St. Mary's County Department of Public Works and Transportation asked the commissioners on April 28 to approve a letter of support for a grant application to renovate and expand the Charlotte Hall Library.
Public Works Director John Norris and Michael Blackwell of the St. Mary's County Library described the facility and the renovation plan: the building is roughly 23,500 square feet with the county using about 10,500 square feet of that footprint. The county-side renovation scope would address HVAC upgrades, additional and reorganized program space, and improved staff areas, and staff estimated a county-side project budget in the $5.8 million range. Norris said the application would request about $3.0 million in grant funding.
Commissioners asked whether Lexington Park or other county facilities might be eligible for projects, whether SMRLA (the regional library association) could be relocated to free additional county library space, and whether architects and the state librarian had been consulted; staff said a facilities master study for partners is pending and the consultants are available to produce cost/schedule information required for the grant filing.
A motion to authorize the commissioners to sign the letter of support for the Charlotte Hall Library renovation and expansion grant application was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
